Starting points by style
Rough dial positions to start from — every amp responds differently, so treat these as a jumping-off point and tweak to taste.
Clean / Country
Low gain, bright EQ with treble up slightly, a touch of spring reverb, and a compressor if you want punchy, even picking.
Push the amp into light, natural overdrive rather than a pedal, mid-forward EQ, and a moderate amount of reverb.
Medium-high gain with a mid boost so solos cut through the mix, plus a delay for sustain on longer notes.
High gain, tight low end (roll bass back slightly to avoid mud), a noise gate, and mids scooped or boosted depending on the sub-genre.
Keep EQ close to flat for a natural tone, add only light chorus or reverb, and go easy on compression.
Very low gain or fully clean, warm and rolled-off treble, and a hollow-body guitar into a flat-response amp for a round, mellow tone.
Nylon-string guitars rarely need an amp, but if amplified via a pickup, keep it flat and clean with just a touch of reverb to preserve the natural tone.
Bright, clean, and dynamic with minimal effects, so fast flatpicking and interplay with other acoustic instruments stay crisp and articulate.

Feedback, and how to stop it
That rising squeal or low howl is the amp's own sound getting back into your pickups and going round again. It is a loop, so you break it by changing one part of the loop.
What makes a good lead
Your cable is part of your signal chain, not an accessory. A bad one hisses, crackles and quietly takes the top end off your tone.
Practice vs gigging
A 10–20W combo is plenty at home; gigging usually calls for 30W+ or a PA-fed setup.
Tube, solid-state, or modeling
Tube amps are warm and dynamic but heavier and pricier; solid-state is reliable and affordable; modeling amps pack many amp/effect tones into one unit.
Combo vs head & cab
Match the guitar
Electric guitars need an electric guitar amp; acoustic-electrics sound best through an acoustic amp built for a fuller, flatter response.
Channels & effects built in
Some amps offer separate clean and overdrive channels, or built-in reverb/delay — handy if you don’t want to buy pedals right away.
Gain vs volume
Gain (or "drive") controls how distorted the tone is; volume (or "master") controls how loud the final signal is.
Bass, mid, and treble shape the tone — small adjustments go a long way.
Standby switch
On tube amps, flip power on first and let it warm up before flipping standby — protects the tubes.
Effects loop
Time-based effects (delay, reverb) usually sound best plugged into the effects loop rather than the regular input, after any distortion.
Headphone / line out
Lets you practice silently or record direct into an interface without mic’ing the speaker.
Turn the amp’s volume up before your guitar’s to keep the signal-to-noise ratio clean.
Point the amp away from the mic or pickups when recording or on stage to avoid feedback loops.
Let a tube amp warm up for a minute before playing hard.
Start with EQ flat and gain low, then add only what the song needs.
Use a surge-protected power strip, especially for tube amps.
Don’t run a tube amp at full volume with no speaker or load connected — it can damage the output stage.
Don’t stand directly in front of the speaker at high gain with the guitar pointed at it — that’s what causes squealing feedback.
Don’t leave a combo amp on standby for hours — switch it off fully when you’re done.
Don’t stack too much gain from both a distortion pedal and a hot amp channel — it usually just sounds muddy.
Don’t cover the amp’s back vents — tube amps need airflow to avoid overheating.
Move, or turn away
Step out of the speaker’s firing line and angle the guitar away from it. Standing right in front of the amp is the most common cause.
Back off the gain
High gain feeds the loop. Lower the gain and bring the master up instead — you keep the volume without the squeal.
Mute what you are not playing
Rest your palm on the strings between phrases, and roll the guitar’s volume knob down when you stop. Open strings ring sympathetically and set it off.
Trim the frequency that is howling
A shrill squeal usually means too much treble or presence; a low, boomy howl means too much bass. Cut the one that matches what you hear.
Acoustic-electrics: cover the soundhole
A hollow body howls at low frequencies through the soundhole. A rubber soundhole cover and a little bass cut fixes almost all of it.
Hum is not feedback
A steady buzz that changes as you turn is single-coil hum picking up interference. Move away from screens, dimmers and power supplies — humbuckers cancel most of it.
Shielding first
Dense braided or foil-plus-spiral shielding is what keeps hum out. Coverage matters far more than the colour of the jacket.
Low capacitance
Every cable rolls off some high end. Better leads state their capacitance per metre — a lower figure keeps your tone bright.
Only as long as you need
Around 3m is plenty sitting down, 6m for standing up and moving. Past about 9m the treble loss becomes audible, so a buffer or active pickup helps.
Look at the connectors
Proper strain relief where the cable enters the jack is where cheap leads fail. Soldered joints and a metal barrel outlast moulded plastic ends.
Right-angle at the guitar
For a side- or recessed-jack guitar, an angled plug at the guitar end and a straight one at the amp puts far less strain on the socket.
Coil it over-under
Alternating the loop direction as you coil stops the cable developing memory and internal breaks. Never wrap it tight round your elbow, and unplug by the connector, not the cable.
A combo (amp + speaker in one box) is simpler and more portable; a separate head and cabinet gives more flexibility later.
