Frequently asked questions
Is GuitarGenie free to use?
Yes. Every guide, chart and tool here is free, with no account and nothing to sign up for.
Do I need to know how to read music?
No. Everything here uses tab and chord diagrams, which do not require reading standard notation.
I am left-handed. Does this work for me?
Yes. Turn on left-handed mode at the bottom of the menu and every chord, CAGED and fretboard diagram mirrors for a left-handed guitar. Tab, tuning and theory read the same either way, so those stay as they are.
Which guitar should I start on?
Any guitar you enjoy picking up. Guitar types covers how acoustic, classical and electric differ, and Buying and selling covers what to check before you pay.
Can I tune using my phone microphone?
Not here. The Tuning tab plays reference tones to match by ear, and explains how to use a clip-on tuner or tune the guitar to itself. A dedicated tuner is more reliable than a browser listening through a microphone, so we would rather point you at one than do it badly.
How often should I change my strings?
Roughly every three months with regular play, sooner if they sound dull or look corroded. Strings and tuning walks through the change.
Why does my guitar buzz?
Usually the setup rather than you. Setup and care explains neck relief, action and nut slots, and when a buzz is worth taking to a tech.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Install GuitarGenie to your home screen and the tuner, metronome and every guide keep working without a connection.
Is the mastery calculator exact?
No. It is a way to picture your progress, not a scientific claim. How you practise matters far more than hours counted.
Something here looks wrong. Can I tell you?
Please do. Use the contact page — corrections are genuinely welcome.
